Who runs these rooms

The studio system that drives some other countries is far less visible here. Most of the country moves one hour forward for daylight saving from March to November, so in summer the range becomes UTC-4 to UTC-7. Arizona (outside the Navajo Nation) stays on UTC-7 all year. Alaska and Hawaii sit further west still.

Take a typical 9 pm start and see where it lands:

• New York, 9 pm is 01:00 UTC in summer and 02:00 UTC in winter. For Central Europe that is 3 am either way.
• Chicago, 9 pm is 02:00 UTC in summer and 03:00 UTC in winter, so 4 am in Paris or Berlin.
• Denver, 9 pm is 03:00 UTC in summer and 04:00 UTC in winter, 5 am in Central Europe.
• Los Angeles, 9 pm is 04:00 UTC in summer and 05:00 UTC in winter, 6 am in Central Europe.

Europe and the US do not change their clocks on the same weekend. For a few weeks in March and again from late October to early November, the gap shrinks by an hour, which explains why a favourite performer can seem to start "early" for a short stretch.

The practical upshot: for a European viewer, US prime time is a late-night or early-morning affair. Afternoon and lunchtime streams in the US, which plenty of independent performers run, fall into the European evening and are the more realistic overlap. Viewers in the Americas have it easy; the US evening is their evening.
